So, last night was the second and final part of the second series of Queer As Folk...

Well, it was much better than last week's and had more of the atmosphere and style of the first series. Some great lines and moments:
Romey to Stuart: 'You and Vince are like a married couple'.

Stuart: 'But we're not shagging.'

Romey: THAT'S a married couple...'
There is even a car chase and I laughed like a drain as Vince and his mum drove through a band of marching teenage majorettes.

Among all the girls there is one little boy:

'He's not gay' says Vince sarcastically as they pass. Lines like that will ring a bell with homosexuals worldwide and are one of the features that have made QAF such a treat.

Also in this final part, Nathan (now 16) tackles his teacher who is turning a blind eye to anti-gay remarks in class. There is even a cameo appearance by Mr Gay UK.

So it got to 5 minutes from the end and I was feeling SO glad that this last show was good. At that point there's an emotional scene which brought a lump to my throat.

Unfortunately, for me, it then lost the plot completely, with a really bizarre ending! I don't want to spoil it for anyone by saying too much. Suffice to say that this series is about Manchester and should have stayed there.

I heard that Channel 4 wanted the second series to be eight parts like the first, but the writer couldn't do it. To me, four minutes from the end was the point where he finally ran out of ideas.

Fine, the series is over, the characters are going nowhere after this. In a sense he can do what he likes with them. Except that leaping off into what seems to be fantasy, undermined the entire series for me and the realism of it.

I felt cheated and let down. I have watched the end again since and haven't changed my mind. A final thought... Does the ending have anything to do with the series that is apparently going to be made in the United States?

I was gobsmacked (as we say in Manchester!).
